A radical new battery system is a world
first for one of the leading cargo airlines, BA WORLD CARGO.
BA World Cargo recently opened a specialist
handling facility, named Premia, at its London Heathrow headquarters.
The new £15m development forms a substantial part of
BA World Cargo's long term investment into its premium products,
including Prioritise, a product that carries freight of any
weight across the carriers global network.
BMIB was one of the specialist suppliers involved
with setting up the latest BA World Cargo expansion making
their materials handling operation more efficient by reducing
obstacles to deliver a first class service to their customers.
One of the greatest improvements and a crucial
element to the operation is battery performance. Getting
a full life term from forklift batteries, a significant cost
element, is by no means easy. There are factors unique
to the running of electric powered forklift trucks which can
radically alter their life expectancy.
A battery designed to work well for five years
or more can be useless after just 12 months if not cared for
properly. BMIB developed a system that would maximise
the life of the battery and reduce unnecessary costs.
The package combines a continuous watering system,
where a de-ionised water reservoir ensures the battery electrolyte
levels are optimised; e-Go battery monitors, constantly checking
the conditions-temperature levels, scale of battery life and
so on- to ensure peak performance, plus a charger guard designed
to eliminate "opportunity charging" which is harmful
to the long-term life of the battery.
BA World Cargo is the first in the UK to utilise
such a system putting them ahead of the competition.
BMIB will continue to offer an excellent back-up service and
maintenance programme, but the end result for the customer
is that all maintenance issues are taken care of, there is
no battery maintenance at all for the operator to worry about.
